JPM ORGANIZED WORKING BREAKFAST ON COMMUNICATION WITH CONSUMERS AND PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION

JPM Jankovic Popovic Mitic law office and Slovenian Business Club in Serbia have held a professional presentation on March 12, 2014 regarding the laws on consumer protection and personal data protection, which prescribe specific rules for processing consumers’ personal data.

Merchants, in the broadest sense of the word (retailers, banks, insurance companies, leasing companies etc.) frequently advertise their goods and/or services through various fliers, catalogues, greeting cards etc. which they distribute to consumers that already use their services and to potential users as well. Merchants also occasionally contact consumers by telephone, fax, e-mail or some other means of communication. For the most part this is done without the prior consent of the persons contacted by the merchants. The Law on Consumer Protection classifies this form of commercial practice as aggressive, and as such prohibited and punishable by law.

The Law on Personal Data Protection specifies rules for processing the data of contacted consumers. The implementation of this Law is monitored by the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection, who has intensified his activities in this field of late. Discussions with some of the biggest companies on the Serbian market have identified matters that can cause communication problems with clients, and how to use personal information in compliance with the law.

The event was hosted by JPM lawyers Ivan Milosevic and Bojan Šunderić.
