Pekez: EU Path Good for Serbia

In an interview for e-Kapija web portal on October 30, FIC BoD member Goran Pekez outlined the importance of harmonization of regulations with the EU for attracting further investments, mainly because it leads to creating the business environment the investors are familiar with, but also because it enhances rule of the law and predictability.

The interview was part of promotion of FIC visit to Brussels. “We support Serbia on its path to creating the open and functional market able to cope with the competitive pressure. This would all lead to strengthening the institutions and creating more transparent conditions for doing business and fair rules for all the players on the market. Consequently, the number of foreign investments would grow as the years pass by”, he said. More than 70% of FIC members have strong presence on the EU market, and it’s clear that the association is ready to invest the knowledge, experience and contacts to move Serbia closer to the EU and help the country achieve the level of EU economies, he said.  Asked about FIC opposition to the Law on Lobbying, Goran Pekez clarified that FIC was against the obligation for all the business actors to report every individual contact defined as the initial step of lobbying by any registered and non-registered lobbyist. “Our opinion is that it could consequently threaten or limit the quality of public-private dialogue”, he said outlining that there are numerous meetings of that type,  in particular with the institutions in charge of wide spectrum of issues such as taxes, trade and consumers. FIC managed to influence the improvement of the Law Proposal so that it doesn’t treat as lobbyists companies and other entities representing their own interests, such as business associations, but it didn’t manage to reduce the burden for the civil servants.
