FIC Celebrated 15th Anniversary

FIC celebrated 15 years of existence by a cocktail in White Palace, attended by several hundreds guests with presence of high Government officials, large number of stakeholders and media, as well as numerous FIC members. The thoroughly prepared programme conferred to the event highly symbolic note, with the address of one of the FIC founders to remind of FIC history and achievements, as well as birthday cake and quality musical programme as a sign of celebration. The anniversary event also had high promotional value, as the info on the event was transmitted by numerous media, who reported from the event or used the press release.

FIC President Yana Mikhailova drew attention to the successful development of FIC in its 15 years of existence. “I was not personally present that special day when FIC has been established, but even today, at this special evening, I can feel energy, passion and commitment” from the times of FIC establishment 15 years ago, she said. FIC President praised the fact that during that decade and a half FIC stayed “on the same course, keeping the same principles and having the same mission“. As the most important achievements she cited constant growth in number of members, expertise and recognition, and the fact it kept independence, both financial and essential. FIC remained faithful to the principles of equity, transparency, predictability, consistency and competition protection, she said. Yana Mikhailova outlined that, in addition to being the driving force and solid contributors to the growth of Serbian economy, FIC members bring highest standards in terms of new technology, corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. She  also drew attention to the FIC positive and constructive approach, with criticizing going together with the practical proposals and readiness to recognize the improvements. FIC President expressed gratefulness to members “who have diligently, patiently and consistently invested time, energy, money, and know-how in making FIC the top class expert in regulatory framework“, but also to the stakeholders for their true recognition and support. “Throughout these years, and political shifts, our main stakeholder – the Serbian authorities always remained receptive to the dialogue. And so did you, important stakeholders from private sector, international organizations, diplomacy, academia – always eager to participate and contribute to the fruitful dialogue“, she said. The importance of synergy was outlined “because only in synergy we can move together, we can clearly achieve much more than each and every one alone“. FIC President invited guests to remain committed to creating simpler and better business environment in Serbia. ‘’When there is a will, there is a way“, concluded Yana Mikhailova, inviting guests to attend the WB presentation this November.

Serbian Government was represented by the FIC Finance Minister Dusan Vujovic, who praised the role of foreign investors as the ones contributing to the growth, employment and good fiscal results, notably through the contribution to the exports. While two fifths of the direct investments go directly to the growth of the export-oriented activities, all the investments contribute to the GDP and employment, minister Vujovic said. He in particular outlined that 16,400 jobs were created in 2016 as a result of the FDIs. “In short, it is not just the quantity of 2 billion (Euros a year), it is the quality of foreign investors that we are welcoming in Serbia and hope this will help change the attitude to work and the way we organize our economy and achieve our results to become efficient country and competitive country in the region and in the world”. Minister Dusan Vujovic expressed readiness to cooperate with FIC in the future, and in particular announced that the Government will attend the WB launch this November.

First FIC General Secretary Christoph Greussing evoked the times when the creation of FIC was discussed and organized despite the difficult circumstances including lacking infrastructure and regulatory framework and low productivity. “However at that point of time already, a small group of foreign investors were brave and optimistic and were investing in this country, bringing fresh capital and new technology and creating new jobs”, he said, noting that the amounts of investments were then quite limited. At that time, ahead of the creation of FIC, the aim of such endeavour was to support the Government in its reforms efforts. First FIC General Secretary noted with pleasure that some other persons who contributed to the FIC creation were also present at the 15th anniversary celebration. ”The principle and the initial idea of the FIC remained the same – it’s simply sharing experience we had in other countries, as well as our know-how, and bring it to the market”, he said, clarifying that the objective of the organization was never to secure any sort of privileged status or subsidies. Christoph Greussing concluded that the FIC is now reputable, well accepted organization with more than 130 members, standing for 28.7 billion Euros, and offering jobs to 94,000 Serbian employees.

FIC moderator Slavko Beleslin said that the creation of the FIC in 2002 was a true visionary step, and reminded of the tough economic and social circumstances in the country in that period, with the economic reforms being almost an unknown concept, and the country heavily reliant on the donations even for the basic needs of its citizens. Back in 2002, FIC mission was defined as creating, together with the authorities, more favourable environment for foreign investments and providing reliable information on the opportunities for investing in the country, Beleslin reminded, adding that by further developments this proved to be the right path. Official part of the programme also included the performance of Una Saga Serbica, and presentation of FIC development and achievements ”FIC milestones“. FIC BoD, committee chairmen and the executive office staff were then invited to the stage for cutting of the FIC 15th anniversary celebration cake and symbolic opening of the bottle of champagne, with the FIC BoD President Yana Mikhailova being the one who cut the first piece. After the official part, guests took their time for networking and relaxing in the fresh air of the White Palace garden, with nice musical background of RTS Big Band.
